This historic Columbus building, once an “open-air school” for children at risk of contracting tuberculosis, has undergone a dramatic transformation. Utilizing historic tax credits, our team converted the historic structure into a commercial hub with a diverse mix of local businesses. Tenants include Emmett’s Cafe, the Butcher Shop Fitness, Joshua Schottenstein Pottery, and Understory, a restaurant and bar featuring a tucked-in patio overlooking the Tuttle Park woods to the west.

Key historic spaces -- such as classrooms, stairwells, corridors, the cafeteria, restrooms, and a covered play area -- were preserved in their original layout. Many original features were retained, including stairs, interior doors, blackboards, and most lockers. Historically appropriate entry doors and transoms were also installed at the main south and west entrances. Exterior renovations included repairs to windows, the roof, and masonry, all of which were in poor condition.
