One of eight glass-roofed shopping arcades built in Ohio between 1876 and 1928, the Newark Arcade opened in 1909 and serves as a landmark structure in downtown Newark. The Arcade remained a vibrant part of the City until the past decade, when it fell into severe disrepair. With new owners in place, the Arcade is now restored and serves as part of the ongoing revitalization of downtown Newark.
As the first phase of the restoration, Schooley Caldwell completed a facility assessment and master plan, with design and construction following. Schooley Caldwell also helped the new owners apply for historic tax credits, which helped to finance the project.
The second phase, a full renovation, is now complete, restoring the building’s original character and reconnecting the community with a familiar part of its past. Containing 19 apartments on the upper floors and various retail and office spaces on the first floor, the Arcade is helping give life to the surrounding area by bringing residents, businesses, and daily activity under one roof.
